Mudbabies has been creating handmade pottery since 2022. Located in Bethlehem Pennsylvania I am a one person studio committed to making art pottery.
My pieces are mostly wheel thrown and then finished by carving or sculpting. Occasionally I will hand build and decorate a piece. Some of my pieces such as my rectangular bud vases or tiles may be from a press mold that I made and carved. All of my pieces are worked from start to finish by my own hands. None of my artwork is slipcast or mass produced. While I do repeat some forms and decorations each one of my pieces is unique with its own personality. I consider them to be one of my babies. All of my pieces start from a ball of mud that is turned into something unique.
In my younger years I wanted to become an artist. I took many classes through a local school and gravitated towards sculpture and ceramics. My love of art also lead me into the antique business where I developed a love of Arts and Crafts era pottery. My influences are mainly from potteries such as Fulper, Teco, and the Greuby Pottery Company. Another potter of this time period was a potter named George Ohr. While I admire his works I really loved that he referred to his pots as his mud babies. I feel that this is a true reflection of the evolution of each of my pottery pieces and Mudbabies was born.
